Screen mounting and tensioning

Mounting the screen and achieving proper tension with TruSim’s TruStrap™ or TruGrom™ systems is accessible for a patient DIYer. The process requires working methodically from center outward, tensioning incrementally and checking for evenness as you go. Rushing the tensioning phase — fully tensioning one side before starting the other, for example — creates uneven tension that’s difficult to correct and produces a visibly distorted image.

If any component anchors into wall framing or ceiling joists, accurate location of those structural members and use of hardware rated for the load is critical. A screen mount that pulls out of drywall is not just a frustrating failure — it’s a safety event. The National Wood Flooring Association and general construction standards require that fasteners for dynamic loads be anchored into structural framing members, not just sheathing or drywall. If you’re not confident in your ability to locate and anchor into framing, hire a handyman for this specific task.

Electrical work

Any electrical work beyond plugging into existing outlets — adding circuits, installing dedicated receptacles, running conduit — must be done by a licensed electrician in most U.S. jurisdictions. The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires permits and licensed installation for new circuit work in residential settings. This is not optional and not worth working around.

This approach typically saves $1,000–$2,000 in labor while keeping the highest-consequence tasks in professional hands.

How to Know If Your Space Needs Professional Help

Most residential builds can be handled with a partial DIY approach — but certain space conditions push more of the work into professional territory. If any of the following apply to your build, budget for professional involvement in at least those specific tasks.

Your ceiling requires anchoring

If your projector or overhead mesh needs to anchor into ceiling joists rather than sitting on a freestanding truss, locating those joists accurately and using the right fastener load ratings is critical. A projector mount that fails mid-session is a safety event, not just an inconvenience. If you’re not certain of your ceiling structure, a handyman or contractor for this single task is money well spent.

Your room needs new electrical circuits

A full simulator system — PC, projector, launch monitor, lighting — draws 400–600 watts during operation. If your planned space doesn’t have adequate existing outlets on dedicated circuits, adding them requires a licensed electrician. If you decide to bring in professional help for all or part of your build, the quality of the installation depends heavily on who you hire. Not every contractor or AV installer has experience with golf simulator builds — and the specific requirements of screen tensioning, projector geometry, and launch monitor positioning aren’t intuitive to someone encountering them for the first time. Here’s what to ask before committing.

Have you installed a golf simulator before?

Experience with simulator-specific builds matters. An AV installer comfortable with home theater work understands projector mounting and cabling — but may not know that a simulator projector’s throw geometry is completely different from a home theater setup, or that screen tension affects ball response. Ask for specifics about past simulator projects if possible.
